Friday 8 September 2017

On 8 September Teresa attended the Ethel Benjamin Memorial Commemorative lecture at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery. The speaker was Professor Nicola Peart of the Faculty of Law of the University of Otago. Professor Peart gave a very enlightening summary of the laws in the area of death, inheritance, and relationship property. Over the years there were significant developments in women’s property rights as surviving spouse against the competing interests of children under inheritance laws. Professor Peart provided a succinct illustration of the path of women’s property rights and provided her views as to how the conflicts in the present law should be resolved.
